Technical Writing A-Z: A Commonsense Guide to Engineering Reports and Theses

You are invited to join colleagues from industry, academia and government at the 27th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering (OMAE 2008) which will be held at the Estoril Congress Centre, in Estoril, Portugal between 15-20 June 2008.

The event is organised by ASME International, the OOAE Division of the International Petroleum Technology Institute (IPTI), and the Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical University of Lisbon), through its Unit of Marine Technology and Engineering and is sponsored by various professional associations of many countries.

The objective of this annual international event is to provide a forum for the scientific and industrial community from around the world to meet and present advances in technology and its scientific support, to exchange ideas and experience whilst promoting technological progress and its application in industry as well as international cooperation in ocean, offshore and arctic engineering.

The Conference proceedings will be indexed in the ISI Web of Knowledge.

The Conference will have nine traditional Symposia and will be complemented by four Special Symposia

Nick Newman Symposium on Marine Hydrodynamics
This special symposium is to honour the significant accomplishments of Professor Nick Newman in the fields of marine hydrodynamics which has formed the foundation of much of the development of floating production systems in the last few decades. Additionally, a review of the present state of marine hydrodynamics and a look at the future of this area of investigation is intended.

Yoshida and Maeda Special Symposium on Ocean Space Utilization
This symposium is organized to honour the significant accomplishments of Professors Koichiro Yoshida and Hisaaki Maeda in the fields of Ocean Space Utilization. They have both been leading researchers on the subject of hydroelasticity and structural mechanics of Very Large Floating Structures.

Industrial Workshop on Advances on Strain-Based Designs of Pipelines
Safe and economic development of hydrocarbons resources in remote challenging environments (e.g. arctic, seismic, subsea high pressure/temperature) will potentially require advances in pipeline design and materials engineering. Some of the pipeline related technical challenges associated with the development of these resources are the need for accommodating large deformations due to permafrost related frost heave & thaw settlement, earthquake induced surface ground motions, and thermal buckling and cycling of flowlines.

To address these technical challenges, several major efforts related to strain-based design of pipelines are currently being undertaken by the industry, consultants, and pipe steel suppliers. In order to provide a forum for discussion on some of the recent advances with development of strain-based design methods, a one-day workshop will be conducted at OMAE 2008. Primary objective of this workshop is to bring together technical experts from various organizations working in the area of strain-based designs to present their recent technical developments and to engage in discussions on potential codified methods and associated technology needs. Some topics of interest at this workshop, include, computational and experimental methods for characterization and verification of strain capacity, ECA methods to address strain-based designs, welding & joining technologies, line pipe developments.

For the second year, the Outreach to Engineers Specialty Forum is planned to run during the OMAE Conference in Estoril.
