International Doctoral School on "Contact Mechanics"
An international doctoral school is proposed by the ASME Tribology Division. It will take place in Miami the evening of October 22 and October 23 the whole day following the IJTC2008 conference. This doctoral school is open to ASME and STLE student members. The objective of this short international doctoral school is to exchange research experience among junior and senior researchers, and to have a brief overview of some recent developments in the field of contact mechanics, including experiments and modeling, and fluid and solid aspects. MSc and PhD candidates working in the field of Tribology will first participate to 3 short lectures on Contact Mechanics given by 3 international experts with different background. The students will also present and discuss their PhD research. The working language is English. The admission is free and limited to those that are registered to IJTC2008 as student member.

Professor John A. Tichy to present Awards Luncheon address on "Can Tribology and Rock 'n' Roll Peacefully Coexist?"

Dear colleagues:

The IJTC Conference Planning Committee, track chairs and contributing authors have assembled an excellent program for the 2008 STLE/ASME International Joint Tribology Conference and we invite you all to attend.

Co-sponsored by the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and the Tribology Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the IJTC will be held October 20-22, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Miami, Florida (USA). Conference Registration and Hotel Reservations may be accessed from the links to the left of this message.

This meeting is bringing together researchers from around the world to exchange ideas and share knowledge between participants from academia, research laboratories, industry, and government agencies. You may view the preliminary program by clicking on the "Technical Program" tab on lsft side of this page.

We are pleased that Professor John A. Tichy of the Mechanical, Aerospace & Nuclear Engineering Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Engineering has agreed to present the Awards Luncheon program on Tuesday, October 21st. John has selected for his presentation "Can Tribology and Rock 'n' Roll Peacefully Coexist?", a topic that John knows well. He is not only an award winning engineer, but is also listed in the Who's Who in Rock & Roll and the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll for his work as a singer, songwriter and guitarist in the 1960s and 70s with Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen.

We are also pleased to offer sessions on Tribomaterials, Nanotribology, Biotribology, Lubricants and Additives, Elastohydrodynamic and Hydrodynamic Lubrication, Rolling Element Bearings, Machine Component Tribology, Contact Mechanics, Magnetic Storage, Manufacturing/Metalworking and Engineered Surfaces. In addition, this year the program includes four leading-edge symposiums and panels of special interest to participants. These include:

  • A Symposium on Interfacial Phenomena in MEMS
  • A Special ASME Research Committee on Tribology (RCT) Workshop on Surface Engineering - Coatings, Texturing and Beyond
  • A Panel on Wind Turbine Powertrain Tribology
  • A Magnetic Storage Symposium on Tribology and Reliability in Data Storage.

Miami is a world-class city located at the southern end of Florida on the Atlantic Ocean. Miami's climate is tropical due to the Ocean and bays that surround the city; and there are a number of natural attractions within a short drive from the conference. The restaurants, entertainment, beaches, and music are varied and world renown, making this an ideal location for an international conference.

We sincerely hope that you can join us in Miami for the STLE/ASME International Joint Tribology Conference. For more than 50 years, IJTC has been known as the place where the top people in our field describe and debate their research - and have a good time doing it! As one of my colleagues said recently, "If you want to stay in the forefront of tribology, while seeing old friends and cultivating new ones, come to the IJTC. You can't miss this conference!"

STLE/ASME Tribology Conference Planning Committee
