All student attendees are invited to enjoy free food and a chance to meet other students. Look for the "ASME Student Picnic" sign in the lobby of the conference hotel. We will leave from the lobby shortly after 5:30pm and walk to Shoreline Park near the hotel.

Student Design Essay Competition
Time: 9:00am - 2:00pm
Location: Seaview Rotunda & Foyer, Lower Level, 1st Floor, Hyatt Regency Long Beach
Students are invited to write essays on what they believe engineering design will be like in 2025. Winners receive support for their trip to DETC up to $1,000. Although the essay competition is open to both undergraduate students and graduate students in separate divisions, only graduate students submitted entries this year. Eight essays received awards, three of them were jointly written so we have 11 winners. When an essay has been written jointly, the authors share the prize. Funding comes through Delcie Durham at NSF. The ASME provides certificates, recognition and poster space. The students will present posters -Students will also receive certificates at the DED Honors and Awards Luncheon. This competition was established in 1998 at the Atlanta DETC.

The ASME Computers and Information in Engineering (CIE) Division invites all attendees to join us for a special showcase and anniversary reception event on Tuesday evening that celebrates the 25th CIE Conference and also commemorates both the 25th Anniversary of the Division and the 125th Anniversary of the Society. The event will be the 2005 IDETC/CIE's Conference celebration of ASME's 125th Anniversary.

CIE 25th Anniversary/ASME 125th Anniversary Reception

At this combined 25th Anniversary/125th Anniversary Reception, the 25 years of the CIE Division will be recognized and invited speakers will address the reception to talk about the past, present and future of CIE and ASME. Special activities being held as part of this reception include use of workstations to browse photos and papers from the CIE Conferences, access to collections developed of memorabilia from the Conferences and copies of the Most Influential Papers of the CIE Conferences will be provided. The invited speakers representing the ASME are:
Robert E. Nickell
ASME President, 1999-2000
Robert E. Nickell, Ph.D., is president of Applied Science & Technology of Poway, Calif., an engineering consulting company that specializes in life-cycle management and license renewal issues relating to nuclear generating plants. Dr. Nickell is a past president and past secretary-treasurer of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and has held many other leadership positions during his 35-year association with the Society. He has served on the ASME Board of Governors and has been a long time contributor to the ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping Division and Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. In addition to life-cycle management and license renewal activities, Dr. Nickell is involved with structural integrity evaluations, transport and storage of spent fuel, fabrication of transport casks, risk assessment, federal regulations and consensus codes and standards. His clients include electric utilities, government agencies, research organizations and manufacturers. Dr. Nickell attended the University of California at Berkeley where he earned a Ph.D. in engineering science in 1967. He is an ASME fellow.
Terry E. Shoup
ASME President Nominee, 2006-2007
Terry E. Shoup, Ph.D., P.E., is a professor of mechanical engineering at Santa Clara University, Calif. Dr. Shoup has more than 35 years of experience in engineering education and has served on the academic faculties at Florida Atlantic University, Texas A&M University, the University of Houston and Rutgers University. Dr. Shoup, a fellow of ASME and past member of the Society's Board of Governors, has been nominated to serve as president of ASME during the 2006-2007 term. During his 36 years of service in ASME, he has been involved in a number of K-12 activities and also supported programs for young engineers. Dr. Shoup has also worked as a design engineer and consultant to many businesses and industries, including the high-technology firms of Silicon Valley. Dr. Shoup has co-authored Design of Machine Elements (Prentice-Hall, eighth edition in 2004), which provides a comprehensive survey of machine elements and analytical design methods. He has been awarded the ASME Centennial Medal (1980) and ASME Gustus Larson Award (1981). He is also the recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Ohio State University. Dr. Shoup earned his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at Ohio State in 1969.
