About Long Beach
Long Beach is centrally located in the heart of Southern California. Long Beach
approximately 25 miles south of the city of Los Angeles, on the Pacific Ocean.
Aquarium of the Pacific
Take a journey of discovery through the world’s largest ocean at the Aquarium
of the Pacific!
Meet more than 12,000 animals as you explore sunny Southern California
and Baja, the frigid waters of the North Pacific and the colorful reefs of the
Tropical Pacific.
Catalina Island
Only one place is home to both flying fish and buffalo-Catalina Island. Make
your way to this nearby island for a day filled with more adventure and amusement
than any theme park. In the sheltered and secluded city of Avalon, you’ll
find quaint shops and restaurants. Here, you can also enjoy kayaking, jet skiing,
swimming, snorkeling, and more in Catalina’s crystal clear waters filled
with colorful fish.
Queen Mary
From luxury liner to troop ship to southern California landmark, the Queen Mary
has undergone many transformations since its maiden voyage in 1936. Permanently
docked in Long Beach since 1967, it serves as first class hotel as well as tourist
attraction. The Queen Mary “The grandest ocean liner ever built”
was hostess to the rich and famous during the 1930s and considered by many as
the only civilized way to travel. World War II saw the Queen Mary’s conversion
to a troop ship know as the “Grey Ghost”, carrying up to 15,000
troops at one time. She later carried more than 22,000 war brides and children
to the United States and Canada. She returned into peacetime service in 1947,
she continued trans-Atlantic crossings for another 20 years.
By 1967, air travel
was more safe and affordable and the days of luxurious, transatlantic travel
were almost a thing of the past. After her arrival in Long Beach in December
of 1967, she was removed from British registry and ownership turned over to
the City of Long Beach. Her operation, maintenance and preservation are entrusted
to the non-profit RMS Foundation.
Pine
Avenue
Long Beach has some of the finest restaurants in Southern California - and you'll
find several of them on Pine Avenue. For special occasions or to just "hang",
choose between several elegant venues with live jazz or a piano bar. Relax with
your friends at an authentic brewery or spice up your night with fine ethnic
cuisine. This newly renovated area is just across from the Performing Arts Center,
so it's easy to plan your evening to include it all. There are theaters, cigar
bars, cafes, shopping, art galleries, pretty much you can do it all here on
Pine Avenue. And everything is conveniently close - walking distance to most
of Long Beach's hotels, museums, the Convention Center and the Transit Mall.
Be sure to plan a day or evening exploring all that Pine Avenue has to offer.
