Nigel
Darby joined GE Healthcare Life Sciences in 2003 and is
currently General Manager for BioTechnologies and Chief Technical
Officer for GE Life Sciences. The BioTechnologies business is a
leading supplier of products, technologies and services for a wide
variety of applications, including biopharmaceutical and vaccine
manufacturing, protein purification and analysis, cell technology,
biosensors and drug discovery.
From
1997-2003 Darby held a number of positions with AstraZeneca, finally
as Vice-President for Chemistry Technology, with responsibility
for teams in Sweden, the U.K, Australia and the U.S.A. In this role,
he led the development of new approaches to lead discovery and core
facilities in compound management, HTS, structural biology, natural
product chemistry, computational chemistry and combinatorial chemistry.
Prior
to entering the pharmaceutical industry Darby had spent 16 years
in academic research in medicine and molecular biology with positions
at the National Institute for Medical Research in London, the M.R.C
Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge and at the European Molecular
Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany.
Darby
received his M.A in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge
in 1981 and his Ph.D in drug metabolism from the University of Kent
in 1985.
