Puerto Rico is one of the top five Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Centers
of the world. With more than $4 billion invested in Biotechnology facilities
during the last 4 years, the island is a mayor key player in the biopharmaceutical
industry. The keynote address will present the highlights of what makes
the island of Puerto Rico one of the global leaders in the manufacturing
of life science products, and will discuss current industry challenges,
and future trends.
Sigfrido
Garcia is the current President of the Board of Directors
of INDUNIV, and Director/Team
Leader of Pfizer’s New Processes & Technology in Puerto Rico.
INDUNIV is a nonprofit
organization representing industry, government and the academic sector to
advance understanding of the pharmaceutical and bioscience development fields
in Puerto Rico. Governed by a Board of Directors, INDUNIV
seeks to create a most favorable environment for applied research in Puerto
Rico to reinforce the island’s scientific and technological infrastructure
and provide the basis for a stable and enduring knowledge-based economy.
Sigfrido holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Puerto
Rico (1984), and an M.S. (1986) and Ph.D. (1989) in Chemical and Biochemical
Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
Ivan
Lugo is Executive Director of the INDUNIV
Research Consortium, and has over 25 years solid Global Executive Leadership,
Technical and General Management experience with world class pharmaceutical
and chemical corporations. Initiated his career in 1975, Ivan held various
positions at leading companies including Eli Lilly, Monsanto, and Merck.
During his 20 years with Merck, he held various responsibilities which led
to a promotion in 1992 to General Manager responsible for opening the Merck
Pharmaceutical plants in Mexico.
In 1995 he was assigned to Puerto Rico to start-up the newest high volume
pharmaceutical plant in Arecibo where he successfully start-up a high throughput
automated plant and established an organization that transferred and launched
Merck’s top Blockbusters, supporting $7 billion in sales.
Ivan Lugo holds a Master of Sciences in Environmental Engineering Science
from Southern Illinois University, a BS in Biology from the Inter American
University of Puerto Rico and has successfully completed the Manufacturing
Executive Program at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and the Executive
Business Program from Harvard University, MA |
