| Chief Engineer, Phantom Works
Mark Burgess is
the chief engineer of Phantom Works. Mark is responsible for ensuring
technical and engineering excellence for the Phantom Works
organization – providing functional oversight for all Phantom
Works engineers. He ensures that Phantom Works, as the advanced research
and development arm of The Boeing Company, has the right people, processes,
and resources in place to enable successful results and transfer of
technology throughout the Boeing enterprise.
Mark also is responsible for the Advanced Lean Enterprise organization,
which has enterprise-wide responsibility for the development of common
engineering tools that enable breakthrough levels of improvement in cost,
cycle time, and quality. Other elements of the ALE organization include
Enterprise Labs & Test Technologies – responsible for developing
and delivering improved test tools and methods to reduce test cycle time,
cost, and risk – and Design and Collaboration Technologies.
Mark
reports to the president of Phantom Works and is a member of the Boeing
Enterprise Engineering Team.
Prior to this assignment, Mark supported the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF)
program. His previous positions on the JSF program include St. Louis
site director and X-32 Air Vehicle Analysis and Integration team leader.
Mark
joined Boeing in 1979 in Wichita, Kan. Since then, he has worked on numerous
programs, including B-52 and KC-135 upgrades, Transatmospheric
Vehicle, National Aero-Space Plane, U.S. Navy A/FX, and the DARPA Advanced
Short Takeoff and Vertical Landing (ASTOVL) program. He has also worked
in aerodynamics technology leading several research and design tool development
projects.
Mark holds bachelor’s and master’s of science degrees
in Aeronautical Engineering and a master’s of science degree in
Industrial Administration, all from Purdue University.
Mark and his wife
Laurie live in Seattle with their two daughters. Mark enjoys skiing,
sailing, golf, and hiking.
