MULTIDISCIPLINARY ENGINEERING IN PREPARATION FOR THE BIONIC AGE

TUESDAY, JUNE 10 • 10:30 AM - 12:00 NOON

Are we ready for the Bionic Age? As life expectancy increases, our aging population relies more and more on medical technology to stay active and maintain a good quality of life. Engineers play a central role in the medical technology that has been credited for introducing medical implants and instrumentations to assist patients requiring artificial body parts. By some estimates the Bionic Age will be in full swing by the year 2050 as more than a quarter of our population will enjoy life with artificial organs and other body parts. In this workshop, you will learn about recent developments in medical devices and how multidisciplinary teaming has made these life-saving and life-enhancing technologies possible.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR GLOBAL COMPETITION

TUESDAY, JUNE 10 • 10:30 AM - 12:00 NOON

Companies in widely diverse technologies are seeing vast opportunity in emerging and high growth foreign markets such as China, India, and Eastern Europe. At the same time, many companies in those foreign jurisdictions are themselves filing for international patent protection, making it a more competitive landscape for U.S. manufacturers. Such increasing efforts of foreign manufacturers to build fences around their own product markets require concerted effort on the part of domestic manufacturers to meet such threats by strategically developing and managing a customized intellectual property portfolio that best positions them for global competitiveness. In this workshop, you will learn about how a global intellectual property strategy can be developed and implemented to ensure that innovations are best positioned to provide the company the maximum competitive leverage. Part of the discussion will include a review of the suite of intellectual property protections available (i.e., patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets) that can provide valuable tools to competitively position an innovative company.
