| The SMASIS Student Events Committee has planned several activities
for students attending the SMASIS Conference. The activities are designed
to increase awareness of quality scholarly research, promote interaction
with members from the scientific community (industry and academia), and
provide a mechanism to develop long term social and professional relationships
with fellow students. The events include:
Best Student Paper Competition
The ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee organized
the Best
Student Paper Competition as part of the ASME/AIAA Conference
on Smart Materials Adaptive Structures and Integrated Systems (SMASIS).
Entrants will be judged by a committee of smart materials and structures
experts. Finalists are required to present their papers at The Student Best
Paper Sessions on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 . All finalists will be
honored during the Pioneer Banquet.
Student Hardware Competition
The ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee is
organizing the Best
Student Hardware Paper Competition as part of the ASME 2010
Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems
(SMASIS). Entrants in the competition will be judged by a committee of smart
materials and structures experts and a list of finalists will be determined
based upon the technical paper. Finalists are required to present their
papers at a regular conference session and must participate in a special
exhibit session on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 to demonstrate hardware
operation and a present a poster explaining the nature of the project. All
finalistswill be honored during the Pioneer Banquet.
Student Haunted Tour
The students are invited to explore Philly by night! A Haunted Trolley
Tour has been arranged to take students through Philadelphia’s historic
streets to unearth the mysterious legends and dark secrets of the city
on Wednesday September 29th. The tour will allow students to socialize
and interact on the bus while enjoying a few “haunting” historical
tales. Students can sign up and get details at the conference registration
counter (space is limited). Please meet in the hotel lobby. Buses will
leave promptly at 8:00 pm and return approximately at 10:00 pm. Special
thanks to NSF for sponsoring this event.
Student Mentoring Luncheon
During our Networking Lunch on September 29, from12:30 PM – 2:00
PM, students will be given the opportunity to have lunch with professionals
from academia, government, and industry. During the lunch, students will
be grouped with mentors who can answer questions and provide guidance
in taking the right steps leading to a rewarding and successful future
career. Students will be seated at reserved tables during the luncheon.
Lunch will be held in Ormandy West.
Smart Trivia
Participate in a Spiritedly Memorable
Amazingly Riveting non-Technical
(SMART) trivia lunch led by the Students and Young Professional Symposium.
Participants are encouraged to form multicultural, inter-generational
teams by sitting at the same lunch table. A quizmaster will guide the
teams through a multi-round “Phily Pub” style trivia competition
which covers a wide array of non-technical topics.

card). Failure to do so will result in a cancellation of the

The conference is NOT responsible for the
payment of this room. If you do not show up on the expected
arrival date, your reservation will be canceled and the credit
card will be charged the first night's fee.
