Student Event Activities

The SMASIS Student Events Committee has planned several activities for students attending the SMASIS Conference. The activities are designed to increase awareness of quality scholarly research, promote interaction with members from the scientific community (industry and academia), and provide a mechanism to develop long term social and professional relationships with fellow students. The events include:

Best Student Paper Competition
The ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Technical Committee organized the Best Student Paper Competition as part of the ASME/AIAA Conference on Smart Materials Adaptive Structures and Integrated Systems (SMASIS). Entrants will be judged by a committee of smart materials and structures experts. Finalists are required to present their papers at The Student Best Paper Sessions on Monday, September 21 from 9:20 AM-10:40 AM and 11:00 AM – 12:20 AM. All finalists will be honored during the Pioneer Banquet.

Student Dinner Cruise

Students are invited to a night out on the town! A special dinner cruise has been arranged aboard the Harbor Cruise in Ventura County on Monday September 21st. The outing will allow students to meet one another for a fun night of socialization and peer interaction. Students can sign up and get details at the conference registration counter (space is limited). Please meet in the hotel lobby. Buses will leave promptly at 6:00 pm and return approximately at 9:30 pm. Special thanks to NSF for sponsoring this event. Monday, September 21st 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM Hotel Lobby.

Student Mentoring Luncheon
During our Networking Poolside Lunch on September 22, from 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM, students will be given the opportunity to have lunch with professionals from academia, government, and industry. During the lunch, students will be grouped with mentors who can answer questions and provide guidance in taking the right steps leading to a rewarding and successful future career. Students will be seated at reserved tables during the luncheon. Lunch will be held Poolside.

Volleyball Challenge
Come participate in a lunch time volleyball game! Students at the SMASIS conference will be taking on the Professionals in a lively game of volleyball during lunch on the last day, September 23, from12:20 PM – 2:20 PM. We will be playing a few games over lunch so everyone will have an opportunity to play. Let’s end the conference right by enjoying the great California weather.
