Collective Challenge

Collective Challenge
Time: 9 AM - 5 PM, each day
Room: Colony

How will our field transform our world in the 21st Century? What are the technical challenges barring our way to true change? How should we come together to address the issues and realize the full potential of smart materials? We invite you to personally participate in the Collective Challenge where these topics and more will be interactively explored:

Day 1 — Monday, September 21st: Opportunities for Transformational Impact. Think high risk-high payoff: Participants will have the chance to think outside the box and articulate ideal future states with few or no constraints. Nothing is off the table — concepts should be bold and broad! Sectors such as health, transportation, security, entertainment are only beginnings.

Day 2
— Tuesday, September 22nd: Technical Stumbling Blocks to the Dreams. Continue to add to our opportunities list, but we’ll season the grand schemes with a dash of reality. What are the true technical issues that must be addressed to realize success? (Saying “More Money” does not count!) What is on your dream list to be fixed? A lack of actuator authority, power, efficiency, complexity, multiple scale or are all the parts there and just need to be integrated or what…?

Day 3
— Wednesday, September 23rd: Forming of National Transformational Teams. Here we are looking for self-forming groups who, on the basis of common interest, resources, personality, or who just want to continue SMASIS camaraderie, to attack specific opportunity topics. The groups will decide how deep they dig, the team character (from simple chat groups to coalitions or teams for future research), and what their goals and end products will be. We will include time on the agenda at next year’s SMASIS for groups to report on progress and updates.
