B.S. level Competition |
Deadline

Cash awards for the

in each level! |
This competition is divided into multiple levels (BS, MS, Doctoral*) and
multiple technical areas to provide for a fair evaluation of student work.
Submission of extended abstracts in all technical areas is encouraged.
When submitting, select the technical area (theme and subtheme) first,
and then select the appropriate paper type (BS-level student paper competition,
MS-level student paper competition, PhD-level student paper competition)
to ensure that your work will be reviewed appropriately.
PRESENTATION
INFORMATION
Information specific to preparing your presentation.
For each level, submitted papers will be reviewed by a panel of experts in a two-step process:
- Detailed review of abstracts based on structure, composition, and
technical merit for acceptance into the on-site competition. (Note:
PhD-level abstracts not accepted into the on-site competition will be
considered for the regular program. However, those MS- and BS-level
abstracts not accepted into the on-site competition will not be considered
for the regular program.)
- On-site judging will be based on both presentation and technical merit.
- BS and MS competitions will involve a poster-based presentation
of the research results during a dedicated poster session.
- The top 36 abstracts in the PhD competition will be selected
as finalists and judged on-site in 6 highlighted parallel podium
sessions. There will be no PhD poster session.
Following on-site judging, scores from both the abstract and on-site presentation
will be weighted equally and combined for an overall score. Winners will
be announced at the banquet on Saturday evening. The table below describes
the areas and projected cash awards to be dispersed.

Students who enter the competition must meet the following criteria:
- The student, listed as lead author, was the primary researcher on
the project.
- The project was conducted while this student was enrolled at the level
indicated in the competition.**
- The student will be able to present the paper, in either poster or
oral format, at SBC2012. (Guidelines for poster and podium presentations
will be the same as the standard technical sessions.)
- The student will submit only one paper as presenting author to the
Student Paper Competition.
- Work submitted and planned for presentation is not being submitted
to any other session at SBC2012.
- Work submitted and planned for presentation cannot have been published
in a peer-reviewed format at the time of submission.
In order to comply with these specific rules, students are required to make sure they have discussed and finalized their submission plan to the student paper competition with their thesis/dissertation advisor.
The deadline for submission to the Student Paper Competition is extended to January 13, 2012 (5 P.M., Eastern Standard Time). Abstracts must meet
the standard guidelines for an official two-page SBC abstract. When submitting
your abstract, be sure to select "Student Paper Competition"
at the appropriate level (BS, MS or PhD) as the paper
type. As is true for all conference submissions, abstracts
will only be considered for presentation if they include research results
and not simply a description of what will be studied.
Questions about the Student Paper Competition may be submitted to Tammy
Haut Donahue, PhD, SBC2012 Student Paper Competition Chair.
*Doctoral students may be pursuing a PhD, MD, or equivalent terminal degree.
**Students may have graduated before presenting their research, but the
research must have been completed during their enrollment as student at
the designated level.
