Student Paper Competition

STUDENT PAPER COMPETITION

Attention students at the BS, MS, and PhD levels! The Bioengineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers cordially invites your abstract submissions to the Student Paper Competition of the ASME 2010 Summer Bioengineering Conference.

Ph.D. level Competition
M.S. level Competition
B.S. level Competition
Deadline January 15, 2010
Cash awards for the top
three student papers
in each level!

This competition is divided into multiple levels (BS, MS, Doctoral*) and multiple technical areas to provide for a fair evaluation of student work. Submission of extended abstracts in all technical areas is encouraged. When submitting, select the technical area (theme and subtheme) first, and then select the appropriate paper type (BS-level student paper competition, MS-level student paper competition, PhD-level student paper competition) to ensure that your work will be reviewed appropriately.

PRESENTATION INFORMATION
Information specific to preparing your presentation.

For each level, submitted papers will be reviewed by a panel of experts in a two-step process:

  1. Detailed review of abstracts based on structure, composition, and technical merit for acceptance into the on-site competition. (Note: PhD-level abstracts not accepted into the on-site competition will be considered for the regular program. However, those MS- and BS-level abstracts not accepted into the on-site competition will not be considered for the regular program.)
  2. On-site judging of poster or podium presentation based on presentation and technical merit.
    • BS and MS competitions will involve a poster-based presentation of the research results during a dedicated poster session.
    • The top 6 papers in each Doctoral-level technical area will be presented in a highlighted podium session in place of the poster presentation. The remainder of Doctoral-level papers will be presented in a dedicated poster session.
    • For the Doctoral-level poster competition, the top 10 papers in each technical area will be judged on-site for presentation.

Students who enter the competition must meet the following criteria:

  1. The student, listed as lead author, was the primary researcher on the project.
  2. The project was conducted while this student was enrolled at the level indicated in the competition.**
  3. The student will be able to present the paper, in either poster or oral format, at SBC2010. (Guidelines for poster and podium presentations will be the same as the standard technical sessions.)
  4. The student will submit only one paper as presenting author to the Student Paper Competition.
  5. Work submitted and planned for presentation is not being submitted to any other session at SBC2010.
  6. Work submitted and planned for presentation cannot have been published in a peer-reviewed format at the time of submission.

The deadline for submission to the Student Paper Competition is January 15, 2010 (midnight, Pacific Standard Time). Abstracts must meet the standard guidelines for an official two-page SBC abstract. When submitting your abstract, be sure to select "Student Paper Competition" at the appropriate level (BS, MS or PhD) as the paper type. As is true for all conference submissions, abstracts will only be considered for presentation if they include research results and not simply a description of what will be studied.

Questions about the Student Paper Competition may be submitted to Ender Finol, PhD, SBC2010 Student Paper Competition Chair.

*Doctoral students may be pursuing a PhD, MD, or equivalent terminal degree.
**Students may have graduated before presenting their research, but the research must have been completed during their enrollment as student at the designated level.
