Biomass and Coal Fuel Quality

Monday, July 12
1:00pm - 5:00pm

Presented by
Christopher Blazek, Vice President, Enviro-Burn Inc. and Chair, ASME Power Division
Dr. Ashwani Gupta, Univ. of Maryland, Distinguished University Professor and Worcester Reed Award Recipient

The use of biomass for power generation in the non-pulp and paper market has increased significantly in the past decade. This workshop will address the impact of biomass, coal, and biomass co-firing quality on combustion, slagging, fouling, corrosion, ash disposal, catalyst poisoning, emissions and plant performance. Understanding these issues is critical to plant availability, capacity increases, heat rate, maintenance, and costs. The workshop will focus on end-results and application of fundamental information to minimize fuel quality impacts on operations and the environment. Various technologies, predictive techniques, and models will be reviewed that have been used to mitigate slagging and fouling and aid in the selection of fuels. The workshop will focus primarily on biomass and coal in utility scale boilers, but other technologies such as biomass post-combustion processing and gasification will be briefly address.
