Keynote Session

"Perspective on Energy Policy and Steps Forward"
A forum and discussion with power industry leaders.

Tuesday, July 21
8:30am – 10:00am

National Energy Policy has been described as lacking for many years.
Navigating through all the key decisions related to State, Federal and environmental constraints and a definitive ROI required by the Utilities and IPP's, has left new power development challenged. Stranded assets are not an option nor tolerated. What is the key to long term sustainable growth? Support of expanding US power generation needs is not in question. An important question is what will the power mix look like and how will our emerging US Energy Policy affect power generation?

We are very fortunate to have three keynote speakers, each expert in their field, to address power generation, each with their own unique perspective.

Pat Themig, Vice President, Generation
Public Service of New Mexico

Patrick Themig serves as Vice President, Generation for PNM Resources and its subsidiaries. He is responsible for the strategic direction and operations of PNMR's generating facilities providing reliable electricity to customers within the company's service territory. Themig recently joined PNMR from Sierra Pacific Power Company, now NV Energy, where he managed a major coal-fired facility. Prior to that, Themig served in a variety of generation industry leadership roles for MDU Resources, PPL Montana, Dynegy and Illinova.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Nelson, Manager, Solar Technologies Dept.
Sandia National Laboratories

Currently, Jeff is managing the Solar Technologies Department at Sandia National Laboratories, and acting senior manager for the Energy and Infrastructure Futures Group, including R&D programs in wind, photovoltaics, concentrating solar power, geothermal, energy storage, energy systems analysis, and materials related energy technologies. Jeff has authored over 50 scientific papers, and was one of the original authors of the white paper outlining the need for a National Lighting Initiative focused on realizing energy efficient LED-based white light technology. Jeff received his PhD theoretical solid-state theory from the University of California, Davis in 1987.

Ed Tirello, Managing Director and Senior Power Strategist
Berenson and Company

Edward J. Tirello, Jr., Managing Director and Senior Power Strategist, leads Berenson & Company's Power and Utilities Group. He joined Berenson from the Utility Investment Banking Group at Deutsche Bank. Ed has spent
31 years of his career as a utility industry research analyst, moving over to the investment banking side as a strategist for the past three years.

Beginning with his 1987 prediction that the industry would consolidate from 150 companies down to 50 in five years (giving rise to the famous "50 in 5" slogan), Ed has been frequently quoted in the financial and trade media on macro industry events and trends. He foresaw the convergence of natural gas and electric distribution companies in the mid-1990s. His latest prediction is that the two new sectors for growth in the industry will be distribution (with ancillary services leading the way) and transmission (with the formation of a $100 billion-plus high voltage transmission industry).
