Sailing Regatta, Paradise Point Resort
Conference theme in action - Sailing Together!
You do not need any sailing experience to participate in the regatta. There will be a 30-minute dockside instruction by marina staff, on water practice and instruction for the inexperienced.
You may join this event as a single for $25 or a 4-person team for $100. Singles will be formed into teams immediately prior to the event.
Regatta schedule:
2:30pm: Registration and finalize crews by OMAE personnel
3:00pm: Attendees get 30 minutes dockside instruction by Marina staff, or the experienced sailors can go for a spin.
3:30pm: Attendees practice on the water while staff visit the boats via motor craft and give on the water guidance for those who need it.
4:00pm: Regatta begins
5:00pm: Regatta ends
14ft Catalina Capri sailing boats with a fixed keel will be used.
The regatta will end in time to attend the Welcome Reception.
Registration for this event is not included in any registration package.

Accompanying Persons Tour - Behind the Scenes at the San Diego Zoo
After a brief narrated tour through San Diego you will arrive at the world famous Zoo where special arrangements have been made for you to go behind the scenes. You will have a private tour and walk behind enclosures, visit the feeding areas and learn how the zoo houses and cares for over 3,500 animals. Guests will then have the opportunity to explore this distinctive Zoo for the afternoon at their leisure or be transferred to Old Town. This is the historical heart of the city and contains buildings and museums from the early settlement of California as well as restored Victorian mansions. Old Town has become a shopper's delight with colorful international treasures and the charming Bazaar del Mundo.
Lunch is not included but there are plenty of casual dining places in both the Zoo and Old Town.
Timeline:
9:00am: Depart Hotel and tour of San Diego
10:00am: Behind the Scenes tour of the Zoo
12:00pm: Optional departure for Old Town shopping
3:00pm: Depart Zoo and Old Town for Hotel
3:30pm: Return to Hotel
The cost of this tour is $40. It is not included with any registration package.

Gala at Aerospace Museum
Take a pleasant drive through San Diego to the cultural heart of the city: Balboa Park. Here the Aerospace Museum provides and outstanding aerial ambiance showcasing the history of aviation. San Diego has been important in aviation history from Lindberg through to space travel and you will be immersed in exhibits from the Kitty Hawk to space modules. The Art Deco building that house these enveloping exhibits is itself interesting; built in the shape of an eight to show off Ford's V-8 motorcar for the1936 World's fair. Drive time is 15 minutes from Paradise Point.
Timeline:
7:00pm: Coaches arrive at Paradise Point Resort to transport attendees
7:15pm-7:30pm: Arrive at Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park
- There is a two hour open bar; thereafter it is a cash bar
- Coaches will be available for the return trip throughout the evening with a final departure scheduled for 10:15pm
The cost for this event is included in Early Bird or Regular Full Conference Registration and Outreach Specialty Forum registration. Additional tickets may be purchased for this event for $105 USD.

Optional Technical Tour
Board your bus at 8:00 AM at the Paradise Point Resort for the 45 minute escorted drive, to Escondido, California, center of the avocado growing area of Southern California. In Escondido you will visit the Offshore Model Basin, one of the world's largest privately owned and operated model basins devoted to offshore testing. We will also visit the Escondido headquarters of BMT Scientific Marine Services, where much of the instrumentation for monitoring of offshore platform performance is developed.
You will then head south to San Diego for a lunch overlooking the Bay at Tom Ham's Lighthouse, one of San Diego's landmark restaurants on Harbor Island. From here you can watch the sailboats and ships, including aircraft carriers home ported at the North Island Naval Air Station, directly across from the restaurant. These might include the USS Nimitz (CVN-68) or the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76).
After lunch we will make our way to Point Loma, headquarters of the U.S. Navy Third Fleet and homeport of several nuclear submarines. There you will visit the Marine Physical Laboratory of Scripps Institution of Oceanography. You will go on board the famous Floating Instrument Platform (FLIP), the first spar buoy used for research purposes. We are also fortunate enough to have in port this week the Woods Hole Oceanographic ship Atlantis with the world's first deep ocean manned submersible, Alvin.
After leaving MPL, you will continue your guided tour to San Diego's Embarcadero where you will have one and a half hours to explore the USS Midway aircraft carrier, or the San Diego Maritime Museum. Admissions are not included in the tour price.
The cost of this tour is $75.
NOTE: For this tour you must have government issued photo ID and you need be to be properly attired, specifically no open-toed sandals or flip-flops and ladies should wear slacks or shorts.
