The Robert Dean Symposium on Coastal and Ocean Engineering
A celebration of Professor Dean’s lifetime scientific contributions

This symposium is a highlight of the Offshore Technology Symposium and Ocean Engineering Symposium

Objectives
The principal goal of this symposium is to honor the significant accomplishments of Professor Robert Dean in the fields of wave mechanics, coastal structures, beach nourishment, fluid-structure interaction, and other advanced topics of fluid mechanics which has helped our coastal and ocean community to advance to its present state. In addition, the goals are to review the present state of ocean engineering, and to chart the future of this area of investigation from the point of view of ocean and offshore engineering. This symposium shall provide guidance and inspiration for those of us interested in continuing to advance ocean engineering as we begin the 21st century. The primary topics to be covered in the technical sessions of this symposium within the OMAE are itemized below:

• Linear and nonlinear wave theories and wave mechanics
• Tsunamis and rogue waves
• Coastal engineering, including breakwaters, piers, etc.
• Ports and harbors
• Hydrodynamics
• Wave forces on nearshore structures
• Fluid-structure interaction
• Beach nourishment
• Sediment Transport

Submit your abstract to SYMP 9 -- Offshore Wind Energy -- and e-mail a copy to the Abstracts Coordinators at chakrab@aol.com and/or ertekin@hawaii.edu.

Once an abstract is formally accepted we will ask the participating authors to prepare a paper to be reviewed for publication in the conference proceedings.

Selected papers will be further reviewed for the Journal of OMAE which will be published collectively in a special issue of JOMAE.

Solicitation for Participation
Professor Dean has graciously accepted our invitation to honor him at the OMAE 2007 Conference in San Diego in June of 2007. This call for papers is particularly aimed at the participation by his former students and colleagues, and others intimately interested in the subjects of his research and teaching.

Honored guest: Professor Robert Dean

Biographical sketch of Professor Dean:
Prof. Robert Dean is considered one of the pioneers in the development of coastal engineering and has contributed to many engineering projects within the United States coastal region as well as internationally. He made an impact in the early development of waves and wave forces. He is well-known for his development of the Stream Function Theory which is routinely used in the design of offshore and coastal structures today. It is included in most of the design codes of these structures. He also has made significant contributions in the area of Beach Nourishments, particularly along the coast of Florida.

Bob has been a professor of the University of Florida at which he is currently the Graduate Research Professor. His numerous contributions to the American Society of Civil Engineering Society was recognized by the ASCE Award for Significant Contributions in Coastal Engineering and Wave Hydrodynamics, 1990

Dr. Dean has received many awards and honors for his work. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1980. He is the recipient of the ASCE International Coastal Engineer Award, 1983, and ASCE John G. Moffatt-Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award in 1987, as well as the recipient of the Gold Medal Award of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association in 1987.
