Special Symposium on Offshore Renewable Energy
Co-Chairs and Organizers:
Charles E. Smith, Minerals management Service, Herndon, VA (smithc@mms.gov)
R. Cengiz Ertekin, University of Hawaii, Honolulu, HI (ertekin@hawaii.edu)
OMAE 2007 is organizing a specialty Symposium entitled "Offshore Renewable Energy." The significance of offshore renewable energy in supplementing the energy demands of society is undisputed. However, very few countries have engaged in developing offshore renewable energy projects. Particularly in the United States, such projects seem to have potential but they are not currently being utilized for commercial energy generation. There are ongoing discussions worldwide on how the various regulatory and technological challenges can be mitigated to promote the use of offshore renewable energy resources. The objective of this Symposium is to provide a forum for the presentation of information and views on regulatory and technology matters to enhance the exploitation of offshore renewable energy resources.
In general, the Symposium will cover all related offshore renewable energy issues of interest to the offshore industry and regulatory agencies. Typical topics will address:
- Offshore energy resource policies and regulatory issues
- Offshore wave energy technologies
- Offshore wind energy technologies
- Offshore current energy technologies
- Ocean thermal energy conversion
- Economic risk assessment of offshore energy projects
- Offshore hydrogen generation
- Offshore energy project environmental issues
