Who is INCE, what is NoiseCon, and why aren’t you meeting at IMECE like you always have?
INCE is the Institute of Noise Control Engineering (www.inceusa.org), a non-profit organization with over 1,000 members. INCE sponsors yearly NoiseCon conferences, and publishes the Noise Control Engineering Journal and Noise News International.
A typical NoiseCon attracts 150 papers, 250 registrants, and 30 vendors, and lasts 3 days. In contrast to the IMECE, everyone at NoiseCon works in Noise Control and Acoustics. With the ASME NCAD members attending, we expect about 200 papers and over 300 registrants to attend next year’s conference. NoiseCons are held in smaller cities than IMECE’s are, and cost less to attend as a result. Registration fees are lower than IMECE’s, as are hotel rates.
NCAD leadership has decided to forgo the IMECE every few years to interact more with other organizations who work in noise control and acoustics. Our hope is to make NCAD meetings more valuable to our members by introducing them to other noise control and acoustics professionals and vendors, and providing them with larger audiences for their presentations. We will return to IMECE in 2009. Depending on our experiences with NoiseCon 2008, future collaborations with INCE and other organizations are possible.
Will ASME NCAD and INCE papers be different?
Yes. ASME NCAD papers will be peer-reviewed, as they always are, and follow the usual ASME conference format. See the Author Resources page for formatting instructions. INCE papers are not peer-reviewed, and will follow the usual NoiseCon proceedings format. Conference proceedings will be provided on two CDs – one for ASME NCAD, and one for INCE.
In that case, will I get both CDs when I register?
Yes.
Will ASME NCAD and INCE papers be presented in separate sessions?
No. We are encouraging the members of our two organizations to intermingle, so all papers will be presented in joint sessions. Usually, there are three NoiseCon sessions each day, with 5-7 papers per session. Each presentation is 20 minutes.
Do I have to be an ASME member to submit an ASME NCAD paper?
No. We welcome papers from new contributors.
After the conference, I’d like to submit my paper to ASME’s Journal of Vibration and Acoustics. Can I still do this even though it’s a joint meeting with INCE?
Absolutely. You can submit papers to the journal at: http://journaltool.asme.org/Content/JournalDescriptions.cfm?journalId=18&Journal=VIB. When you do, ask the Editor in Chief to assign your paper to either Steve Hambric or Jeff Vipperman. Steve and Jeff are our Division’s Associate Editors to the journal.
Have another question? Send the NCAD 2008 conference organizer, Steve Hambric, an email at: sah19@only.arl.psu.edu.
