Hawaii Nanotechnology Laboratory (HNL) is carrying out research projects including nanostructure (nanowires, single-walled and multi-walled nanotubes) synthesis, nanocomposites, hierarchical and three-dimensional nanocomposites, structural characterization, properties measurements and modeling, as well as potential applications. Chemical vapor deposition method is used to produce vertically aligned carbon nanotube films/coatings and other structures. This method can be scaled up to make large-area patterned nanotube arrays for various applications, with controlled nanotube length, orientation, and distribution. A variety of meso-scale three-dimensional architectures consisting of nanotubes with multiple lengths lying along different directions have been constructed. We are working on the multifuncitonality aspects of 3D nanocomposites as related to the structural damping, thermoelastic response dimensional stability, thermal management, electrical conductivity, and through-the-thickness properties. HNL is also pursuing applications in nanostructure reinforced composites, energy storage and conversion, alternative energy, environmental protection, and biological sensors.

Omega is a pioneer in the exploration of the world of Nanorobotics. Nanorobotics opens a new world without walls where words are not required. The probability exists that Nanorobots are capable of communications or can clean up of chemical and biological hazards. Nanorobots could be used to restore our eco systems, remove water pollutants or even repair the hole in our ozone layer. Perhaps, even one day nanorobots will allow us to remove cancer cells and swim like a dolphin without an external air supply.
Come join us on this incredible journey where the here and now becomes the future!
