A competition that addresses issues that are foundational to the creation of a scientific formalism for design.

ASME Student Mechanism and Robot Design Competition (Deadline for Letter of Intent: April 1, 2011; Deadline for Final Report: May 2, 2011)
An excellent opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their design abilities! Separate competitions for both mechanism and robot designs at the undergraduate and graduate level will be held.

MNS Photo Contest (Deadline for Entry Documents: May 2, 2011; Finalist Notification: June 17, 2011)
One of the off-shoots of working with micro and nano systems inevitably is some really interesting pictures of novel creations. The MNS Photo Contest is a forum to display these pictures for recognition and evaluation by leading researchers in the field. Submissions will consist of a 1 page PDF document with the photo along with a 1-2 paragraph caption describing it and what makes it interesting and/or novel. Contest entrants will have their photos and captions on display during the MNS conference and awards for the top entries will be presented at the IDETC 2011 MNS conference banquet. More details and submission instructions are available at the competition website here:

CIE Graduate Research Poster Session (Deadline for submission: May 2, 2011)
This session provides an opportunity for graduate students early in their research program (within 1 year of starting a MS or 2 years of starting a PhD) to present their current work to the research community. It provides the students a chance to get external feedback on their preliminary research that may not yet be ready for presentation at the conference in archival form.
