Welcome to the 2007 ASME Energy Sustainability Conference

This conference heralds a new dawn! Back in 1999, the Advanced Energy Systems Division and Solar Energy Division organized a Joint Conference held in Maui, Hawaii. The alliance was so successful that we decided to get together as soon as an opportunity presented itself. With energy sustainability being a looming societal problem, the 2007 Energy Sustainability Conference is especially appropriate. We not only have an excellent location for the Conference but also a strong technical program. Four concurrent technical sessions along with three keynote plenary sessions (with three exemplary speakers in each session) are planned over the three days of Conference with over 140 technical papers being presented. In addition, on Friday afternoon, there is a three hour-long student session meant to attract students into this socially-relevant and scientifically-challenging area of energy sustainability. Two tutorial sessions are also scheduled. Papers and posters are to be presented by a wide array of speakers from the U.S. and abroad on topics ranging from energy systems and technologies that use alternate fuels for transportation to sustainable building design practices to reduce the impacts on global climate change.

The social events are guaranteed to be equally as attractive. Join your colleagues and other members of the two ASME Divisions at Wednesday's Opening Reception, and an Honors & Awards Dinner on Friday evening that includes an exciting talk by Dr. Hunter Fanney of NIST on "A Sunny Career in Energy Research".

As you attend the different sessions and events, think of how you can get involved in organizing future conferences and sessions as well as writing and/or reviewing papers because this is all happening solely due to the involvement of volunteers. Sign up to be a member of a technical committee and volunteer your time to be a session organizer for future conferences. The issue of energy sustainability currently faced by mankind needs all your young talent, energy, and enthusiasm.

Enjoy the ES 2007 Conference and feel free to ask one of us, the organizers, how we can make this conference all the more exciting and memorable for you.
