| Session Description:
Polymer composites have been in use at Automobili Lamborghini since 1983, and since 2001 carbon-fiber composites have been used in the production of all body panels and portions of the "spaceframe" structure of the Murcielago. Carbon-fiber composites allow an increase in the power-to-weight ratio of the vehicle, enabling a reduction in overall weight while reducing emissions to meet stringent environmental regulations. Current efforts at Lamborghini to produce composite-intensive structures that meet cost and rate requirements include the evaluation of existing out-of-autoclave technologies and their modification to suit Lamborghini's needs. To evaluate the role of composite structures in automobile production, Lamborghini applies the Building Block Approach, derived from the aerospace industry, in which certification is achieved through a complex mix of testing and analysis.
