Human Powered Vehicles are aerodynamic, highly engineered vehicles that may be for use on land, in the water or the air. Some land-based HPV's have achieved speeds of over 60 mph. ASME sponsors the Human Powered Vehicle Challenge each year in hopes of finding a design that can be used for everyday activities ranging from commuting to and from work to going to the grocery store. Senior engineering students can use this competition for their capstone project and with their efforts design and construct a fast, sleek, and safe vehicle capable of road use. A Human Powered Vehicle from Seattle University is featured this year in the HPV booth.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency to promote the progress of science; advance the national health, prosperity and welfare; and to secure national defense. NSF is the major source of federal backing in many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences. NSF fulfills its mission by issuing limited-term grants-about 10,000 new awards per year, with an average duration of three years-to fund specific research proposals that have been judged the most promising by a rigorous and objective merit-review system. Most of these awards go to individuals or small groups of investigators. Others provide funding for research centers, instruments and facilities that allow scientists, engineers and students to work at the outermost frontiers of knowledge. NSF's goal is to support the people, ideas and tools that together make discovery possible.

Polytec is the world leader in non-contact vibration measurement on both macro and microstructures. By applying light-based technologies, Polytec collaborates with customers to solve difficult measurement problems, allowing for better designs, manufacturability, testing and costs for a whole new generation of high performance, reliable products.

For macro structures, Polytec designs simple-to-operate, Single-point and Scanning Laser Vibrometers that measure 1-D and 3-D vibration vectors across large test structures without mounting accelerometers. This paradigm shifting, non contact technology is revolutionizing vibration testing and modal analysis by eliminating the wiring, gluing, mass loading, increased local stiffness, excessive setup times and signal conditioning issues associated with contact transducers. New software advances allow whole body deflection shapes to be created by stitching together vibration data from different sections of a test object. For microstructures, Polytec has merged three technologies into one instrument known as a Micro System Analyzer. By combining laser Doppler vibrometry, stroboscopic video microscopy and scanning white-light interferometry, the Micro System Analyzer can measure out-of-plane and in-plane dynamics as well as measure static surface topography on microstructures such as MEMS.
