Dermotology and Ophthalmology Speakers

  Hal Heitzmann, Ph. D.
Presentation Title: Stents in the Eye
Hal Heitzmann joined Glaukos in January of 2007, with responsibility for continuing applied research in the field of intraocular devices. He has 25 years' experience in development of medical devices at five startup companies and at Edwards Lifesciences, including three previous positions as vice president. Dr. Heitzmann has led development of commercial products for blood gas monitoring, angioplasty, intracranial pressure monitoring, electrophysiology, coronary stenting, thrombectomy, pediatric venous oxygen saturation monitoring, and antimicrobial material development. He holds twelve issued US patents, and six pending patent applications. He has taught at UCI Extension in the Clinical Trials and Medical Product Development certificate programs. Dr. Heitzmann holds a Ph. D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale, where he coinvented avidin-biotin staining for microscopy.

  Dr. Kristen M. Kelly
Presentation Title: Lasers in Dermatology
Dr. Kristen M. Kelly is a board certified dermatologist and associate clinical professor of dermatology and surgery at the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine). She attended the University of California, Los Angeles for both undergraduate studies and medical school. She then completed an internship in internal medicine at St. Mary's Medical Center followed by a residency in dermatology at UC Irvine. After residency, Dr. Kelly completed a fellowship in photomedicine and biomedical optics at the Beckman Laser Institute and then obtained an academic appointment in the departments of dermatology and surgery at UC Irvine. She is currently the Residency program director in dermatology. Her research has helped to 1) develop and optimize a wide range of current light based therapeutics; 2) evaluate and refine epidermal cooling methods; 3) explore the use of photodynamic therapy for cutaneous lesions, especially vascular birthmarks and 4) evaluate the role of angiogenesis in maintenance and development of cutaneous vascular birthmarks and the potential for targeting this process in therapeutics. Dr. Kelly lectures locally, nationally and internationally and has authored numerous scientific papers and book chapters on dermatologic laser topics. She is on the editorial board of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine and has served as an editorial reviewer for many publications. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and her research has been funded by the ASLMS, Dermatology Foundation, Sturge-Weber Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

  Hyle Park
Presentation Title: Applications of Optical Coherence Tomography in Dermatology
Hyle Park received a BS in Physics from Caltech, and a Masters and PhD in Physics from UC Irvine. He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine in the Massachusetts General Hospital before taking his current position in the Bioengineering Department at UC Riverside. A major component of his research is devoted to the development and clinical application of functional extensions of optical coherence tomography.
