A leading specialist in dermatologic, cosmetic and laser surgery, Dr. Christopher Zachary is Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology, University of California, Irvine, CA. He is blessed to work in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
Dr Zachary is a regularly featured physician in 'Best Doctors in America'. He is an educational innovator having founded www.MDlive.net and co-founded www.cme.md. He has been a featured speaker at national and international symposia, and is a regular contributor to academic meetings both in the USA and abroad.
He is a recognized expert in the treatment of skin cancer and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Zachary has published many articles, chapters and one book on surgery of the skin. He has pioneered microscopic detection of skin cancer by rapid immunocytochemistry in frozen sections. With his colleague Dr. Sergei Grando, he cultured the first 'immortal' basal cell cancer cell lines.
With his colleague Dr. Roy Grekin, he co-chaired the popular 'Lasers in Cutaneous and Cosmetic Surgery' courses held in San Francisco, Minneapolis, and London. He has been the program director for the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, and American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology annual meetings. He is a Past President of the Association of Academic Dermatologic Surgeons.
His interest in lasers has led to considerable industry supported research in optimal laser systems for cutaneous laser surgery. He is an accomplished laser surgeon, and has pioneered amongst other things, the development of fractional deep dermal ablation. He performs numerous cosmetic procedures including ablative and non-ablative laser rejuvenation for photoaging of the skin, and dermal fillers. He is on the national register of approved trainers for the use of BOTOX CosmeticTM, and is experienced in the treatment of leg veins.
Dr. Zachary was born in Yorkshire, England, and educated at Ratcliffe College, Leicester, UK. Following his medical school education at the Royal Free Hospital, University of London, he subsequently trained in Internal Medicine and Dermatology. During his time at the Institute of Dermatology, Guys and St. Thomas' Hospitals, he gained an interest in Dermatologic Surgery. His formal surgical education was received at the Department of Dermatology, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA.
He returned to the UK in 1986 to set up London's first Mohs and Laser Surgery unit. In 1988 he was recruited to the Department of Dermatology, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA, as Director of the Cutaneous Surgery and Laser Center where he spent the next 9 years. While in Minnesota, he was elected to the University Senate, was an expert witness before State Committees and served on numerous local and national administrative committees and task forces.
In 1997 he sold his boat and lakeside cabin, and moved West to take a position as Clinical Professor and Co-Director of the Cutaneous Surgery and Laser Center, UCSF, San Francisco, California. After 9 excellent years, he was as surprised as anyone to land his current position as Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Irvine, where he is successfully building the program.
