| The
ASME B46 Surface Quality Committee
will be holding its spring meetings at the Hilton Garden Inn Detroit Airport
Hotel on April 23-24, 2009. These meetings are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC and
they are free to attend.
The
B46 Committee works on writing Standards for new or emerging technology
in the field of Surface Texture metrology. This committee is concerned
with the geometric irregularities of surfaces. It works to define surface
texture and its constituents: roughness, waviness, and lay. It also tries
to define parameters for specifying surface texture. The terms and ratings
they place into the B46.1 Standard relate to surfaces produced by such
means as abrading, casting, coating, cutting, etching, plastic deformation,
sintering, wear, erosion, etc. The B46.1-2002 standard, which is currently
available, covers surface finish, roughness, texture, microfinish, nanotechnology,
bearing area, calibration, certification, fractals, filters, step heights
and instrumentation.
The
B46 Committee generally meets in April and October for one to two days
in various locations around the country. Its meetings consist of a half
day to a full day of Project Team meetings and one three hour session
of the B46 Standards Committee meeting.
